At the risk of sounding presumptuous, this story is a unique and utterly spell-binding experience. It tells the extraordinary tale of how the potent cocktail of greed, religion and politics impacts social relationships, opening a window onto a hidden world of euphoria and debauchery, expolitation and degradation. The novel takes you by the hand and leads you into the murky world of Indian politics a world that is formal and hypocritical, emotional and yet very real. I have always been intrigued by the impact of religion on the politics of South Asia. As such, I decided to explore first-hand the world of realpolitik. And delve I did with unencumbered enthusiasm into the realm of political chicanery and subterfuge in the Indian subcontinent as the subject matter of my first novel. I joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) to get a ring side view of how a right-wing communally oriented political party thinks and acts. Cultivating the leadership was easy. Gaining their confidence wasnt. Nevertheless I persisted. And the results were fantastic. For almost a decade I observed first-hand the pre-eminence of politics of the expedient over a more germane value-based political ethos. I witnessed in person, for instance, not only the demolition of the Babri mosque but also its wanton desecration. My perceptions have been shaped and influenced by whatever I saw and heard in all that time. Nine years of painstaking research culminated into the fruition of Anchorites of Desire. And that isnt all. For the uninitiated, the proposed sequel due for release in November 2000 focusses on the Peoples Party of India (PPI) coming to power in New Delhi on an overtly right-wing agenda. The PPI underlines its desire to eschew non-proliferation and to declare India a nuclear weapons state by exploding a nuclear device. Pakistan follows suit. Tensions escalate leading to a limited armed conflict over Kashmir in which India scores a diplomatic and military victory despite suffering massive casualities. Buoyed by this success the PPI dissolves Parliament and calls for fresh elections. The results are predictable. The PPI storms to power. The new establishment orders a review of the Constitution. Consequently the existing Constitution is scrapped under pressure from the PPIs core supporters and a new Hindu Constitution is adopted. Under the new Constituion, India is declared a Hindu Rashtra in which minorities are politically disenfranchised and economically boycotted. Civil unrest follows aided and abetted by Pakistans intelligence agencies. Rioting and arson break out in different parts of India leading to a dangerous civil war situation. The ruling PPI attempts to divert the peoples attention by launching a pre-emptive strike on the Sargodha missile base as well as the plutonium production reactor at Khushab in Pakistan. The results are catastrophic leading to a nuclear flashpoint over Kashmir....
